“Miss K” (a.k.a. Areta Kalogeras) retired last month after 33 years with the North Hills School District. She was a tremendously positive influence on my life and for many of my friends, too.
It’s obvious in her speech and her actions that she was born to teach. She’s an amazing woman……filled with wisdom, patience, humor, wit, compassion.
It was my honor to perform on her last concert with the High School and it is my pleasure to introduce her to all of you.
For all of those who aspire to be great educators…..listen up. She is one of the best.

***NOTICE: On October 29, 2008, the original “Know Your Member” print-out was updated. The update comes courtesy of our friend Ron in California- 2008 “Most Loyal Viewer Award” recipient. He added parts for C, B-flat, and E-flat instruments to join in the exercise. Thus, it’s perfect for almost any ensemble…teachers/conductors take note. Thanks Ron!)***
Here’s a great game to play to learn to HEAR better!
I stole the idea from Brad Edwards. Shhhhh! (I also stole some slide cream from him.)
Brad’s wonderful web presence can be felt most strongly here:
www.bonezone.org
It’s designed for 3 players and will involve chord identification. Doing this for a while with friends/students/teachers will REALLY open your ears. Enjoy…..

Brad Edwards is Professor of Trombone at University of South Carolina. He and I get to perform together a lot with the Augusta Symphony, which is always a treat for me. Brad is one of the most gifted Teacher/Performers I know. He is outstanding at both. I use his books every day, both the Clef Studies and the Lip Slurs. He maintains an excellent website at:

This is a portion of my interview with him on a recent visit to Atlanta. I will, in the very near future, have some clips from the master class he gave at GSU. For now, please enjoy this “hang with Brad”.
I hope all of you are having a good Summer so far! This is a great time of year to participate in outdoor music-making. Just remember the bug spray and wind clips:-)
