Episode 116: Mystery Artist! Do you know this sound?
(NOTE: click on the title of this episode to see updated comments)
Just an audio clip here, ladies and gents, in mp3 format. A chance for you to really stretch those ears and show your listening prowess:-)
Who IS this trombone artist? A prize for the first one to correctly identify this beautiful sound. (Not sure what the prize is just yet, but it will be radically cool and you’ll want to win it.)
I’ll leave the “Comments” open on this one (God help us all!) so you can readily venture a guess. You can always email me, too, with a guess or comments:

Very soon, this artist will be coming on to sit and chat with us about his adventurous and fun-filled life with the trombone… and lucky for us, he has a lot more tracks to share.
Please Enjoy:

Some great guesses coming in via email: Mark Mullins, Urbie Green, Eric Alexander, David Steinmyer
Tim says: “I have listened 4 times. What a natural, velvety, pure sound….and what phrasing. I need a copy!”
I couldn’t agree more. And I think our mystery artist is enjoying this very much:-)

HaHa! No, sorry guys, it is NOT Tommy Dorsey…..as much as I would love to have him come on and do an interview! Nope…not Wes Funderburk, either. But close? Here’s a hint: this artist has a pretty well-known cousin that shares his last name. His cousin is a lead trumpet player hailing from Chatanooga, TN. Anyone? Bueller? Anyone?

BTW- all the names listed and all the good guesses ventured should make for some excellent research for us all. Each of the people mentioned are terrific players! You might want to check them all out if you haven’t already…..

Harry Watters?

Another great guess, Anders.
By the way, did everybody see Harry looking quite spiffy in his dress uniform at the Inauguration!?
In fact, all of our military musicians looked and sounded great. They also looked pretty cold:-) I participated in a few of those “back in the day”. I rather preferred watching in my slippers this time around from the comforts of the “lair”. Bravo, though, to the men and women that performed so admirably on that day!
